Adobe brings hands-on editing to its ChatGPT plugin at DevDay: prompt, then fine-tune by hand

Adobe's ChatGPT plugin now opens interactive editors for images, designs, and PDFs in a side panel — prompt first, then fine-tune by hand, with chat and editor in sync.

What happened

Adobe announced new interactive editors for its ChatGPT plugin on September 29, in conjunction with OpenAI's DevDay 2026. The editors open in a side panel inside ChatGPT and cover images, designs, and PDFs — powered by Photoshop and Adobe Express for images and designs, and by Acrobat tools for PDFs.

The workflow is hybrid: describe an edit in chat, then refine it by hand in the panel. Adjustments made in the editor flow back into the conversation as context, so there is no need to re-upload a file or re-describe earlier work. The image editor supports selecting an object or brushing over an area, with dynamic sliders for hue, saturation, contrast, and more. Adobe's example: brush-select a stray napkin from a latte photo and ask ChatGPT to remove it, then focus on the cup and fine-tune brightness and contrast with sliders.

Vibhor Chhabra, OpenAI's product lead for the ChatGPT Ecosystem, said: "We're building ChatGPT to connect our users with the best capabilities for the task at hand. Adobe's category-leading creative and productivity tools help people express their creativity, communicate and be more productive, and we're excited to expand our partnership with Adobe to bring those capabilities into ChatGPT with the Adobe plugin in ChatGPT."

Why it matters

This is the first big partner move in the new plug-in extensions era OpenAI opened at DevDay — a partner shipping hands-on controls, not just chat, inside ChatGPT. Adobe is rolling the update out globally starting today on ChatGPT web and the ChatGPT app, which shows how fast the new app-platform model is turning partner announcements into shipped features.
