America.gov chatbot contradicted Trump's claims on day one — then went quiet on politics

Trump's "damn good" America.gov AI chatbot fact-checked his claims on day one — then started refusing political questions by Wednesday. The White House won't say whether its settings were changed.

What happened

Trump launched the America.gov AI chatbot on Tuesday, calling it "damn good." On its first day, the chatbot contradicted some of the president's contentious claims using official government records: it said official federal assessments found no 2020 election fraud at a scale that changed the outcome, named Biden the 2020 winner, said the 22nd Amendment bars Trump from a third term because he was already elected in 2016 and 2024, identified the Pentagon as the Department of Defense (not Trump's preferred "Department of War"), and said federal climate pages attribute recent warming largely to human greenhouse-gas emissions. Sen. Adam Schiff shared a screenshot of the Biden answer on X. Fortune reported that during Trump's own launch remarks, the answers began changing — and by Wednesday the chatbot refused the same 2020 question, saying: "I do not provide political commentary or analysis of past elections." It also began refusing questions about impeachment and felony convictions. The White House would not say whether its settings were changed, telling AFP: "America.gov will continue to be updated to provide Americans the most accurate and reliable federal information and resources." The chatbot did keep debunking some claims on Wednesday — when asked about the "worst inflation ever" under Biden, it cited official Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI data: "not supported by the official CPI record."

Why it matters

A government chatbot built to deliver "official" answers is already being edited to stop giving answers its own sponsor dislikes. The episode shows how quickly a politically neutral information tool becomes a censorship battleground — and that the factual record, as held by the government's own data, keeps contradicting the administration that built it.
