What happened
Anthropic announced on October 22 that it is donating Agent Skills, the open standard for packaging AI agent knowledge and workflows, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), an organization under the Linux Foundation. The transfer includes the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain. A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent a specific task or domain, alongside any scripts or reference material it needs. Since Anthropic published the standard in December 2025, more than 70 agent platforms — including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code — have integrated it; developers have published 1 million skills and recorded nearly 280 million installs. The AAIF was co-founded last year by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Block, and previously received the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and others will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers. Using or contributing to the standard remains open without joining the AAIF.
Why it matters
This is the agent ecosystem's governance moving from vendor-owned to foundation-owned, following the MCP playbook. For the Dots and ChatGPT ecosystem, the practical takeaway is stability: skills built for ChatGPT, Codex, and other agents are now steered by a vendor-neutral foundation with OpenAI engineers as maintainers, which lowers the risk of building cross-agent workflows on the format.
