AWS opens Bedrock access to OpenAI GPT models from Canada

Verified· Oct 21, 2026Published Oct 21, 2026

AWS Bedrock now lets customers in its two Canadian regions access OpenAI GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 models, with requests routed automatically to supported processing regions.

What happened

Amazon Web Services says customers can now access OpenAI's GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 models through Amazon Bedrock from the AWS Canada Central and Canada West regions. Bedrock routes requests from the Canadian source region to supported regions for processing, so applications do not need to manage routing themselves.

Why it matters

Canadian teams can build on OpenAI's latest GPT models through Bedrock without leaving the AWS platform, choosing a US geographic profile or a global profile for more capacity.

What it includes

The available models cover GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna, GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, and GPT-6.1 Sol. Customers can choose a US geographic profile to keep processing within Canada and the US, or a global profile to reach capacity across supported AWS regions (global profiles for GPT-5.6 are available only from Canada Central). All models support text and image input, text output, tool calling, reasoning mode, prompt caching and one-million-token context windows, and are reachable via the OpenAI Responses API, OpenAI Chat Completions API or Bedrock Converse API using the Bedrock Runtime endpoint.
