What happened
OpenAI shared updated usage numbers at its DevDay 2026 keynote on September 29: more than 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users, over 35 million weekly ChatGPT Work and Codex users, and 2.5 million businesses on OpenAI products. (ChatGPT weekly users are up from 1 billion earlier in the year, and Codex users are up from about 5 million in June.)
Why it matters
OpenAI is nearing a $70 billion annualized revenue rate, up about 70 percent since the start of Q3, first reported by Axios. Rival Anthropic's rate reportedly passed $65 billion in July and may now match or exceed OpenAI's. OpenAI credits enterprise sales and a price war strategy it doubled down on with the just-launched GPT-6.1 Sol.
The open question
The big question is whether revenue can grow fast enough to cover the massive data center bills.
