ChatGPT launches virtual try-on and shopping favorites, powered by the new Images 2.5 model

OpenAI rolled out virtual try-on and a shopping favorites list in ChatGPT, running on the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model.

What happened

On Thursday, October 1, 2026, OpenAI announced the global launch of two new ChatGPT shopping features: virtual try-on for clothing and accessories, and a favorites function for saving products.

Virtual try-on

ChatGPT users can upload a selfie or full-body photo to visualize how an article of clothing or an accessory would look on them. A new Try On button appears in ChatGPT's shopping results. Users can also upload an image of an item itself — such as a web screenshot — and ask ChatGPT to try it on for them.

Favorites

The new favorites option lets users save products they discover to a Library in the app, so they can return later. Saved items sit alongside try-on images, according to the company.

Under the hood

OpenAI says both features leverage the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which the company claims produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and reduces image generation latency.

Why it matters

ChatGPT can also shop for the pieces to complete a described style, or find items from uploaded photos of celebrities' outfits, moving into fashion-discovery territory long dominated by Pinterest and Google. The launch comes after OpenAI pivoted away from an earlier instant checkout idea that did not perform well, and as rivals push harder on AI shopping: agentic startup Instinct has been sending proactive product recommendations that some users found ad-like, and Google launched its own virtual try-on last year.
