Per Chinese business outlet STCN, reported Sept 29: ByteDance has been internally testing a personal AI agent since April 2026 and plans to release it soon. Alibaba has been expanding its Qwen chatbot since November 2025 into a personal assistant that performs real tasks by linking to shopping, travel, and mobile payment services. Tencent has added agent features to its Yuanbao assistant since July, strengthening handling of complex tasks and document generation. The push extends the U.S.-China AI contest from large language models into the agent market, following Meta's Muse hitting the top of the app download charts and OpenAI's launch of Dots at DevDay 2026.
Why it matters
The agent race is no longer a U.S. duopoly story — the three biggest Chinese tech companies are each fielding personal agents, and ByteDance's since-April internal test plus an imminent release signals a launch wave is near.
