Deleting your Dot can brick it: "Failed to load your dot" bug hits ChatGPT users
After deleting an existing Dot to recreate it, ChatGPT users hit a "Failed to load your dot" error with no way to create a new one. One user reports recovery; OpenAI has not publicly commented.
What happened
On October 8, 2026, users on OpenAI's Developer Community reported that deleting an existing Dot and trying to recreate it leaves ChatGPT showing "Failed to load your dot" in the Your dot section, with no option to start a new Dot. Clicking "Try again" does not fix it. One reporter (on ChatGPT Pro 500, ChatGPT Web) says the error began October 7 and persisted October 8. A second user confirmed the same failure with a "Couldn't load your dot" variant of the error, still unresolved as of late October 8. The original reporter later updated that they were able to create a new Dot with a computer connected, possibly fixed on OpenAI's backend, but described it as their own hypothesis, not a confirmed fix. A third user in the thread said they had been unable to call their Dot for over 24 hours and decided against deleting it. No staff reply was visible in the thread when checked.
Why it matters
Dots launched September 29 and are gated behind paid plans (first dot included in Pro and Business Premium). A provisioning bug that locks paying users out of recreating their agent is a launch-quality issue OpenAI will need to address publicly; for now, users wanting to reset a Dot should hold off on deleting it.
