Dots come to your phone: OpenAI's October update notes let you create your dot in the ChatGPT mobile app
OpenAI's 5-9 October update notes let you create a dot right in the ChatGPT mobile app, ending the launch-era desktop-only setup rule.
What happened
OpenAI's update note for 5-9 October changes the setup rule that had held since launch: you can now create a dot in the ChatGPT mobile app. On your phone you can name the dot, customize its appearance, and connect plugins, and choose to have ChatGPT open straight to your dot's conversation. Get started now lists the mobile app, the desktop app and a desktop browser as equal starting points. Mobile web is still not supported, and connecting your computer still happens in the desktop app.
The same update note carries three more quality-of-life changes. Your dot gets more context from Codex: it can search across your ChatGPT conversations, use context from existing Codex threads and automations, is "better at deciding when to continue an existing Codex thread and when to start a new one", and can read and edit ChatGPT Work automations. Threads your dot manages can rename themselves as the work changes, with fewer redundant "created task" messages, and sidebar loading is faster. Activity that fails to load can be retried instead of reloaded, approval buttons are no longer clipped by oversized Gmail previews, and an Outlook setup hang is fixed.
Why it matters
Dot creation no longer requires sitting at a desktop, which removes the last big friction between hearing about dots and actually having one. The Codex-context changes make the dot more useful once it exists: it can now pick up your existing work instead of starting fresh. (Verified October 10, 2026.)
