OpenAI lets dots delegate work in Codex and edit Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work

#What happened

OpenAI posted an official Dots update on its Developer Community on October 9, 2026, with new capabilities and a round of fixes. It is the day's official announcement thread, separate from Tibo's Day 5 posts on X.

First, dots can now delegate work in Codex. Your dot can start work in Codex and follow up on existing threads, drawing on your ChatGPT conversations, Codex threads, and automations. It is also better at deciding when to keep a thread going or start fresh.

Second, dots can now review and edit Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work. Ask what is scheduled or update a recurring task as plans change.

Third, you can now create your dot straight from your phone in the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android. Mobile dot creation was also announced in Tibo's Day 5 post today.

The announcement also lists small fixes users asked for: faster browsing, smoother scrolling, fewer unnecessary notifications, cleaner code blocks and attachments, easier Outlook setup, clearer plans and easier retries, and more reliable Enterprise access on web and voice.

#Why it matters

Dots started as chat-centered agents, so handing them the ability to start and follow up on Codex threads ties the always-on agent directly into the coding workflow, with context drawn from both ChatGPT and Codex. Scheduled Task editing closes a gap: users reported this month that dots could not discover existing scheduled tasks. Mobile creation, previously desktop-only, widens the rollout further.
