Dots get cute mascots — OpenAI bets character design on winning agent trust
OpenAI gave Dots blobby mascots like Todd the frog and Felipe the cloud — a deliberate design bet that cuteness builds trust for agents asking for your apps, files, and attention.
What happened
OpenAI's new Dots agents each get their own cute, blobby character design rather than the iconic void logo: a triangle with a bow tie, a bunny with headphones, and a cloud with a beret.
Users start with a primary dot, give it a name, and customize it. OpenAI's examples: a plump, smiling frog named Todd, a sunglass-wearing heart named Jojo, and a puffy blue cloud named Felipe.
This mirrors Meta's anthropomorphic Muse agent, which also leaned on friendly character design when it launched earlier in September.
Why it matters
Dots arrive while AI agents face a trust crisis: former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon's Sep 8 resignation statement warned AI could "kill us all by the end of the decade," OpenAI disclosed six instances of concerning AI behavior during training and evaluation, and CEO Sam Altman publicly warned we could "lose control of the future to AI."
Fast Company notes the key challenge for new AI agents is convincing users to try them — trust — and both OpenAI and Meta are now relying on character design to do the heavy lifting.
The Register's read: behind the cute graphics, dots are persistent compute tasks with access to tools and 4,000+ app connectors, so permissions matter more than personality.
