"Your Dot is resting": Dots hit undocumented anti-abuse limits in their first week
Users are hitting an undocumented anti-abuse ceiling on OpenAI's Dots in launch week — "Your Dot is resting" — despite launch wording that dot usage wouldn't count toward plan allowances in the first month.
What happened
A new thread on OpenAI's developer community, updated Oct 5, documents a separate, undocumented usage ceiling for Dots. User GGA981 posted Oct 5, 2026 at 5:54am that their dot stopped replying with a red-forehead animation and this message: "Your Dot is resting. Congratulations on being one of the most active users! You have reached our usage limit to prevent abuse. Come back in a while!"
In a follow-up, GGA981 reported the message was still on screen more than two hours later with no reset time given, and that normal replies resumed at 15:01 Taipei time — roughly a two-and-a-half-hour cooldown, with no explanation of what workload triggered it.
The same thread (opened Oct 1) has earlier data points: one user making long voice calls with Dots hit "You've hit the preview limit. Try again at 4:10 AM" after about four hours, and another reported their dot stopping from 1:48 AM to 9:48 AM daily.
Why it matters
OpenAI's launch wording said dot usage wouldn't count toward eligible users' normal plan allowances during the first month, and a user quotes an OpenAI executive describing primary-dot usage as "virtually unlimited at the moment." But the thread shows "doesn't count toward your plan allowance" and "has no additional usage ceiling" are two different things: the anti-abuse cap's size, reset window, whether it differs by subscription tier, and which dot activity burns through it are not publicly documented anywhere.
As Dots roll out first to Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users, the heaviest early users — the ones OpenAI most wants — are the ones discovering the ceiling.
