Fast Company reviewer says Dots "saved my bacon" - Altman hints at a mass-market version for billions

Fast Company global tech editor Harry McCracken spent a week with OpenAI's Dots agent and says it proactively saved him from showing up at a rescheduled speaking engagement, while Sam Altman hinted Dots will go mass-market "for billions of people someday."

What happened

Fast Company global technology editor Harry McCracken wrote in his Plugged In newsletter that he gave OpenAI's new Dots agent access to his calendar and email. Shortly after, Dots alerted him to a discrepancy: his calendar showed a speaking engagement on one date, but a confirmation email mentioned a different day. The organizers had forgotten to tell him they rescheduled. If he had shown up on the original date, he would have faced an empty room. He writes that this was one of several instances where Dots proactively brought a significant fact to his attention without being asked.

McCracken also tested Meta's Muse and the Instinct agent for comparison and says neither showed the same spark of productivity insight. He found Dots impressive at email triage (surfacing an overlooked freelance message) and shopping research (finding a $100-off deal on an iPad Magic Keyboard and building a wireless-plan report from emailed receipts).

Why it matters

At the DevDay post-keynote press Q&A, CEO Sam Altman said of Dots: "You should of course expect us to do a mass-market thing for billions of people someday." OpenAI product lead Thibault Sottiaux told McCracken at the same Q&A: "We are going to be evolving ChatGPT in place to be this incredible personal assistant very soon," suggesting the line between ChatGPT and Dots will fade. The review is notable because it is one of the first accounts from a journalist with deep account access granted to the agent, testing the exact "always-on" claim OpenAI launched Dots with on September 29. Dots currently runs on GPT-6 Astra, gives each user a Linux computer in the cloud, and is available to ChatGPT's pricier tiers starting at $100 a month.
