Google is killing Gemini Gems — your custom assistants auto-migrate to Spark Skills on Nov 17
Google is sunsetting Gemini Gems and will automatically migrate users' custom assistants into Skills inside Gemini Spark starting November 17, 2026.
What happened
Google placed a notice in the Gemini app's Gems manager stating "Gems will become skills starting November 17, 2026", and will automatically begin migrating users' Gems to skills. Until migration completes, users can continue with Gems.
Skills were introduced with Gemini Spark in May 2026 and serve the same purpose as Gems — giving Gemini custom instructions — but can be invoked directly in the chat prompt box (a slash/backslash), letting multiple skills run at once. Skills are available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers inside the Gemini Spark tab.
Some Gems features have no clear Skills equivalent yet: setting a default tool, attaching specific files for context, and sharing a Gem via a link. Reporters found the notice appeared before supporting items were ready: the linked help article and the Create skills button currently do not work.
Gems launched in 2024 as "custom versions of Gemini" (brainstorming assistant, career guide, coding partner use cases).
Why it matters
The all-in-one AI agent era is killing standalone custom-assistant features — Google is consolidating Gems into Spark as the same wave that produced OpenAI Dots, Meta Muse, and Instinct's $1B round. It also shows the feature-parity risk in platform migrations: users could lose file attachments and share-links they rely on, and free-tier access is unclear if Skills remain tied to Spark subscriptions.
