GPT-6.1 Terra name surfaces in eval configs; The Information reports a cheaper-than-Sol model may be close
Lumina spotted GPT-6.1 Terra in eval configs while The Information reports a cheaper-than-Sol Terra model may be on the way. Verified Oct 20, 2026.
What happened
Lumina reported on Oct 19, 2026 that "GPT-6.1 Terra" appeared in 18 evaluation configs switched from "GPT-5.6 Terra". TestingCatalog notes config switches like that usually happen when a team is preparing to test against a model, so a release may not be far off. Separately, The Information reported (via Stephanie Palazzolo) that a potential new Terra model from OpenAI is expected to beat GPT-6.1 Sol while costing less; Palazzolo later cautioned some launches could slip into November. OpenAI itself has not confirmed anything about Terra.
Why it matters
GPT-6.1 Sol already prices at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and Anthropic's Sonnet 5.5 sits at the same price point. A cheaper Terra that outperforms Sol would sharpen the AI price war. But this is unconfirmed: it rests on third-party config observations and a paywalled report, not an OpenAI announcement.
