GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast is live: six times the price, up to eight times the speed

OpenAI switched on Ultrafast speed for GPT-6.1 Sol on October 8, charging six times standard API rates for up to 8x faster token generation in Codex.

What happened

OpenAI added GPT-6.1 Sol to its Ultrafast service tier on October 8. API pricing is $12 per million input tokens and $60 per million output tokens, exactly six times the model's standard rates of $2 and $10. The company's developer account announced the rollout in an October 8 thread, saying access is coming to the API, Codex, and ChatGPT Work. Speed claims: up to six times faster token generation in the API and up to eight times in Codex versus Sol Standard. Those are OpenAI's stated maximums, not guaranteed times.

Who gets access

API access is open to all users. In Codex and ChatGPT Work, Ultrafast is limited to Pro 500, eligible usage-based Enterprise, and credit-based Edu plans, and Enterprise administrators must enable it. The tier supports US and EU data residency. Ultrafast rate limits for Sol are 1 million tokens per minute for Build, 4 million for Launch, and 40 million for Grow, separate from Standard and Fast limits. Cached input is $0.60 per million and cache writes are $15; regional processing adds a 10 percent premium.

Why it matters

This completes the rollout OpenAI previewed on September 29 when it introduced Sol and said the faster mode would follow in the coming days. OpenAI's named use cases are outage debugging, agents navigating applications, and live experiences. The gap between $12 and $72 for a million input-plus-output tokens makes speed a real line item teams have to route deliberately.
