Microsoft announced at its October 7 Windows and Surface event that Meta's Muse personal AI agent is coming to Windows PCs as a native app, integrated with the newly available MXC sandboxing layer.
What happened
- Microsoft announced at its Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 that Meta's Muse personal AI agent is coming to Windows PCs as a native app. Neither company has given a release date.
- Microsoft executive vice president of Windows and Devices Pavan Davuluri made the announcement in the keynote, and a Windows Experience Blog post after the event says "Muse for Windows, a personal AI agent from Meta, is coming soon as a native app on Windows with MXC integration," describing it as "providing more choice in the agents people can use on their Windows PC."
- MXC is Microsoft Execution Containers, a sandboxing layer that became generally available on Windows 11 today. It lets organizations decide which files and networks an AI agent can reach, with those rules enforced while the agent runs; Microsoft says the same safeguards are built into the experience for people using agents on a personal PC.
- OpenAI's Codex, GitHub Copilot and OpenClaw already support MXC, according to Microsoft, while Anthropic's Claude Code, Perplexity and Manus are among those planning to add it. Microsoft is pushing its own Copilot agent at the same time, which makes giving stage time to a rival agent from Meta a notable move.
- Muse launched in the U.S. on September 8, 2026 on iPhone, Android and the web, arrived in Canada on September 18, 2026, followed with a native iPad app on October 7, and released Muse for Mac on September 17, 2026. Windows users have so far been limited to the web version at muse.ai, where the agent runs in Meta's cloud-based Muse Secure VM and cannot reach files on the PC.
- Meta has yet to post its own announcement. It is not yet clear whether the app will need Windows 11 or a Copilot+ PC, whether it will come through the Microsoft Store or as a download from Meta, how much local file and app access it will get compared to the Mac version, or which countries will get it first. Canada is one of only two countries where Muse is officially available (alongside the U.S.); Canadian availability for the Windows app has not been confirmed. Muse is free for most tasks, with paid Power and Maximum plans at $20 and $100 per month for higher limits.
Why it matters
- Windows is the largest platform Muse has not yet reached natively; a native app with file, notes, calendar and email access (as the Mac app has) makes Muse a direct on-device rival to OpenAI's Dots and Microsoft's own Copilot agent on the desktop.
- Microsoft putting Meta's agent on its keynote stage, with MXC sandboxing as the trust layer, signals that agent permission controls are becoming the shared battleground for the whole AI-agent industry, with OpenAI's Codex already in the MXC camp and Anthropic's Claude Code planning to join.
