Mistral unveils Mistral Large 4: 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model, now in public preview

#What happened

• French AI startup Mistral unveiled Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday at a launch event in Abu Dhabi — its first major model release in about five months (Reuters reporting, fetched Oct 7, 2026). Internally the model was announced under the codename "Le Chonk."
• The model has 1 trillion total parameters with only 49 billion active at a time, per Mistral's technical announcement — the sparse-MoE approach that keeps inference cheaper than the total size suggests.

#Why it matters

• Mistral says Large 4 is "closing the gap with frontier models" in coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing and product design — and Stock said it is capable of designing computer chips. It is the biggest open-weight release since the Dots-era agent race began, and another data point in the open-vs-closed race.
