OpenAI is moving into the domain-name business, applying for 15 top-level domains including dot-brand TLDs for ChatGPT, Codex, and GPT - and competing with Google and Meta for .agent.

What happened

OpenAI has applied for fifteen top-level domain names, moving into the domain-name business itself. The applications, reported by Domain Name Wire on October 7, 2026, cover: agent, agi, asi, chatgpt, codex, daybreak, deploy, evals, gpt, mcp, model, oai, openai, skill, and voice.

Why it matters

Five of the applications are "dot-brand" domains: .chatgpt, .codex, .oai, .openai, and .gpt. Owning these strings outright gives OpenAI permanent brand infrastructure on the internet, alongside its agentic ecosystem strings .agent, .skill, .mcp, .model, and .deploy.

The competition

OpenAI is one of thirteen applicants for .agent and will have to compete against Google and Meta for the domain. Two other companies also applied for .gpt as an open top-level domain. Rival Anthropic applied for only two dot-brand domains: .anthropic and .claude.
