OpenAI cuts Cursor off on Nov 12 over the SpaceX deal

Verified· Oct 22, 2026Published Oct 22, 2026

OpenAI will stop supplying its models to the AI coding editor Cursor on November 12, 2026, after SpaceX bought Cursor's parent company Anysphere. OpenAI says it cannot trust the Musk-owned company to honor its terms; Cursor's CEO says only 5% of user traffic uses OpenAI models.

What happened

OpenAI told SpaceX it will end the arrangement supplying OpenAI models to the coding product Cursor, after SpaceX completed its purchase of Cursor's parent company Anysphere. The cutoff is November 12, 2026, with OpenAI saying it is using the longest notice period the contract allows. Premium, Super, and Ultra Cursor plans will no longer bundle OpenAI models. Using GPT-6 or other OpenAI models inside those plans will bill from the first token at API list pricing. Developers who bring their own personal OpenAI API key can reportedly keep using it inside Cursor's local Chat and Agent features after the cutoff, but the bundled access Cursor negotiated on users' behalf goes away.

Why it matters

OpenAI framed this as a trust issue, not a pricing fight. Its stated position: "We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts." It also said it will withhold future models from Cursor. Cursor CEO Michael Truell disputed the framing and the scale, saying OpenAI models serve about 5 percent of Cursor user traffic and that his team is speaking with OpenAI to resolve it. Cursor hedged earlier: on October 12 it launched the X Subscription, a plan bundling Cursor with Grok, Grok Bot, and X Premium under one shared usage pool, with the cheapest Plus tier at $8 per month including Grok models only. For teams, this is a contract-level dependency lesson: model access is a live vendor relationship, not a permanent feature.

What comes next

Developers relying on bundled OpenAI access inside Cursor need a plan before November 12: shift workloads to Grok or Cursor's own models, bring a personal OpenAI key and absorb direct API costs, or move those workloads to a tool that still bundles OpenAI access, such as Codex CLI. Anthropic, Google, and Cursor's own models keep running in Cursor. The date is proposed, not confirmed final, so verify against OpenAI's official statement before committing to a migration.
