OpenAI's Decisions API enters public beta: $0.10 per million input tokens, answers 10x faster

OpenAI opened its Decisions API to all developers in public beta on October 6, a dedicated endpoint that turns text and images into typed answers on GPT-6 Luna.

What happened

OpenAI released the Decisions API in public beta on October 6, 2026, following a limited preview at DevDay 2026. It is a dedicated endpoint, POST /v1/decisions, that accepts text and image inputs and returns typed answers to developer-defined questions: a predicate (probability a condition holds), a choice (one option from a fixed list with confidence), or a score (rated against ordered severity levels). The endpoint runs only on the gpt-6-luna model. It can be tested in the Playground.

Why it matters

OpenAI says the endpoint produces answers about 10x faster than asking the same question through the Responses API (OpenAI's own claim, no independent benchmark published). Pricing: $0.10 per 1 million input tokens, with no charge for output tokens or cache reads and writes. It ships with Zero Data Retention support, HIPAA eligibility, and US plus EU (EEA/Switzerland) data residency. OpenAI expects general availability in the coming weeks.
