OpenAI donates its Open Responses protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation — rivals hand four agent standards to a neutral home

OpenAI donated its Open Responses protocol to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, alongside donations from Anthropic, Hugging Face, and Alibaba — four rival agent standards now living under one neutral roof.

What happened

On October 22, 2026, at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose, the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a Linux Foundation project, announced four new projects donated by rival AI companies: Agent Skills from Anthropic, Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face, and OpenSandbox from Alibaba. Open Responses is an open specification for talking to different AI providers in one consistent way. It is based on the OpenAI Responses API and defines a shared schema and consistent streaming events. The idea is that you write your app once and it works across providers. The AAIF started in December 2025 with three founding projects (MCP, goose, and AGENTS.md); the four new donations take it to ten hosted projects. Anthropic says it co-founded the AAIF with Block and OpenAI in 2025, and it had already donated MCP. The other two donations: OpenEnv from Hugging Face is a framework and community hub for building reinforcement learning environments, using containerized services that expose MCP and Gym interfaces. OpenSandbox from Alibaba is a general-purpose agent sandbox with multi-language SDKs, unified APIs, and Docker and Kubernetes runtimes; the Linux Foundation lists coding agents, GUI agents, and RL training as use cases. Alibaba's Xiaobin Xu put the motive simply: "we don't want its future to be defined by a single company." Verified Oct 23, 2026.

Why it matters

Rivals rarely share their best work, and these four are the companies fighting each other hardest for agent customers. The AAIF is a bet that agents will grow faster on shared rules than on ten incompatible vendor stacks. For builders, it means a skill or integration written once can increasingly work across tools. A small warning worth keeping: skills can include scripts, so inspect what you install; Anthropic itself plans security guidance for skill authors, which suggests that is a real concern.
