Dots freezes during its first live DevDay demo — "Dottie's having a slow morning"
OpenAI's new always-on agent stalled on stage during its first live demo at DevDay 2026; a Codex voice demo hit trouble too, but both recovered and the show moved on.
What happened
Minutes into the DevDay 2026 keynote at Fort Mason in San Francisco, OpenAI product lead Holly Li asked her Dot — nicknamed "Dottie" — to prep a fictional music app for launch. Dottie went quiet. After replying "Checking that now" and then "Still checking," Li filled the dead air in front of the keynote audience: "I guess Dot's having a slow morning."
It wasn't just Dots: a Codex voice demo wouldn't start at all. The presenter acknowledged the "voice difficulties," switched to typing in the terminal, and the demo worked. It was handled well — and a fair reminder that voice still has reliability gaps, even on the biggest stage OpenAI has.
Why it matters
Dots is built entirely on the premise that you can walk away and trust it to keep working — running on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser. The freeze was awkward but not fatal: Dots are rolling out today to Pro and Business Premium users (excluding the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK), with Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare able to join a beta once a workspace admin enables it. The first dot is included at no extra cost, and dot usage won't count toward plan allowances for the first month.
