OpenAI employee arrested for planting hidden recording device in office; FBI involved
An OpenAI employee was arrested after hiding a recording device in the office. OpenAI used its own AI models to identify the device and who planted it. The worker was fired, and OpenAI says it has no indication of model-weight or data theft. The FBI made the arrest and the investigation continues.
What happened
OpenAI said one of its employees has been arrested after the company identified that the person had hidden a "sophisticated" recording device inside one of its offices. OpenAI said it used its own AI models to examine the device and trace it to the employee, the device having been planted a few days earlier. The worker has since been fired. The company posted on X on Tuesday, October 14: "At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data." OpenAI said it alerted the FBI, which made the arrest, and that its investigation is still ongoing. The story was reported by Bloomberg and published October 14, 2026.
Why it matters
This is the second insider-security incident at OpenAI this month. Earlier in October the company terminated three employees for allegedly violating policies on handling sensitive company information (already covered in our earlier story). OpenAI framing its own models as the tool that caught the device turns a security embarrassment into a product demonstration, but the arrest keeps the spotlight on how hard it is for AI labs to secure themselves while shipping fast. With the FBI investigation still open, more details are likely.
