OpenAI partners with Ironclad to turn real contract workflows into agent training tasks

OpenAI is partnering with contract platform Ironclad to turn real contracting workflows into research tasks that train and evaluate AI agents; GPT-6 Astra was the first model trained this way, scoring 32% higher and 48% faster than GPT-5.6 Sol.

What happened

OpenAI announced a partnership with Ironclad, a digital contract lifecycle management platform, plus other software companies, to train and improve AI agents. The announcement came in a Tuesday (Oct 6, 2026) blog post.

Together, they are "identifying challenging, high-value tasks and turning them into research problems for training and evaluating our models," OpenAI said.

The partners developed tasks that require agents to configure agreements, approvals, and reusable legal terms, and OpenAI demonstrated progress on these workflows.

OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra was its first frontier model trained in part by Ironclad tasks, and in a research evaluation it scored 32% higher and 48% faster than GPT-5.6 Sol.

Ironclad CTO Sunita Verma said agents need to understand the full contracting lifecycle — how business workflows connect while preserving the controls teams rely on — and that the collaboration brings real-world challenges into the research process.

OpenAI is inviting other software companies to join the collaboration by applying.

Why it matters

This is OpenAI's playbook for closing the gap between lab benchmarks and real enterprise work — training agents on actual business workflows (procurement, approvals, contracting) rather than synthetic tasks.

The move fits a broader enterprise push already covered on dotsfeed: OpenAI is pushing specialist dots for enterprise roles like procurement and customer support via its Microsoft Agent 365 integration, and GPT-6 Astra also powers the always-on Dots agents. Now the workflows those agents run are becoming the training ground for the next generation of models.
