OpenAI launches ChatGPT Atlas: an AI browser with ChatGPT built in, and GOOGL slips about 2%
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-first browser with ChatGPT built in: an Ask ChatGPT sidebar on every page, agent mode for Plus and Pro users, cursor chat, and browser memories. macOS first, Windows, iOS, and Android to follow. Alphabet shares fell about 2% to $251.50.
What happened
During an October 21 livestream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman introduced ChatGPT Atlas as "an AI-powered web browser built around ChatGPT". Atlas is globally available for macOS first, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions to follow. Its centerpiece is a persistent Ask ChatGPT sidebar with full page context for summaries, product comparisons across tabs, translations, and code explanations. The browser defaults to a split-screen view showing the page and the ChatGPT transcript together, and adds cursor chat (highlight any text and have ChatGPT revise it inline), browser memories for personalization with opt-out-by-default browsing data for training, and incognito windows. An agent mode rolling out to Plus, Pro, and Business users lets ChatGPT carry out multistep web tasks such as booking reservations or editing documents. On the news, Alphabet (GOOGL) fell about 2% to $251.50, after dropping as much as 4.8% intraday per MarketWatch. Atlas enters a crowded AI-browser field alongside Perplexity's Comet, The Browser Company's Arc, Opera, and Google's Gemini inside Chrome.
Why it matters
Atlas is OpenAI's first browser and a direct challenge to Chrome's roughly 3 billion users and Google's core search and advertising business. For the first time OpenAI owns the browsing surface end to end instead of living inside other companies' browsers and extensions. Watch adoption numbers and how fast rivals respond.
