OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra: computer-use model at half the API price of its predecessor

OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a computer-use model with half the API price of GPT-5.6 Terra, now available in ChatGPT Work, Codex and via API.

What happened

OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a model focused on computer operation that can understand screen content and execute actions across applications, according to a PANews report on October 26 citing an OpenAI post on X. The model is available starting today to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users of ChatGPT Work and Codex, and developers can also use it through the API.

Compared with GPT-5.6 Terra, the new model's standard API price is 50 percent lower. On the Agents Last Exam test, which measures agents' ability to use office software, its performance is comparable to GPT-6 Astra while its per-token price is only one-tenth of Astra's, and its average task completion speed is more than 3 times that of GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, per the same report.

Why it matters

Terra is the computer-use branch of the GPT-6 family, so a cheaper and faster 6.1 generation gives Codex and ChatGPT Work users a lower cost option for screen-and-app tasks that previously leaned on the flagship Astra model. It also follows the GPT-6.1 Terra name surfacing in eval configs on October 20, turning a spotted codename into a shipped model.
