OpenAI's $200 Pro downgrade takes effect October 30 — existing subscribers grandfathered to Oct 29 with a $2,500 credit

Verified· Oct 1, 2026Published Oct 1, 2026

OpenAI's $200 Pro tier moves to lower limits on October 30: Codex/Work allowance drops from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance and the weekly GPT-6 chat message cap falls from 200 to 100. Current subscribers keep old limits until October 29 and receive a one-time $2,500 usage credit.

What happened

Starting October 30, 2026, the ChatGPT Work and Codex usage allowance on OpenAI's $200 Pro tier drops from 20 times the Plus allowance to 10 times. The weekly GPT-6 Pro message cap inside the main chat interface falls from 200 to 100. OpenAI confirmed it will not reimpose the five-hour usage window that applied to earlier Pro tiers (reported by The Next Web).

What existing subscribers get

Current Pro 200 subscribers keep their existing limits until October 29 and receive a one-time $2,500 usage credit that expires December 31, 2026.

The new subscription ladder

Per the same report, OpenAI's full subscription ladder now runs: Free ($0, ad-supported), Go ($8), Plus ($20), Pro ($100), Pro 200 ($200), Pro 500 ($500), Business Premium ($125 per seat per month), and Enterprise (custom pricing). The new $500 Pro tier offers the highest individual allowance at 25 times Plus and is the only personal subscription that includes Ultrafast.

Why it matters

For $200 Pro subscribers, October 30 is the date the announced downgrade becomes real: half the Codex/Work allowance and half the weekly chat cap, with Pro 500 as the upsell path for heavy users. Every Pro tier subscriber starting at $100 per month also gets one Dots agent included — Dot conversations do not count toward the standard ChatGPT message allowance, but tasks a Dot runs inside Codex or ChatGPT Work do count against the usage limit.
