OpenAI strips UTM tracking from ChatGPT links, blinding site analytics
OpenAI dropped the ?utm_source=chatgpt.com tag from ChatGPT-generated links in October 2026. Links now open with noopener and noreferrer, so sites record AI-driven visits as direct traffic. Reported Oct 14: ChatGPT-attributed visits fell by 31,000 daily visits.
What happened
OpenAI stopped appending UTM tracking parameters (including the ?utm_source=chatgpt.com identifier) to links generated within ChatGPT, per a Wisevoter report published October 14, 2026. UTM tracking had been introduced in June 2026. ChatGPT now opens links with window.open using noopener and noreferrer attributes, which prevents referrer data from being transmitted to destination sites. The report analyzed the October 9-13, 2026 period and found traffic previously attributed to ChatGPT dropped by 31,000 daily visits. In an analysis of 500 pages, mobile users encountering site consent banners increased from 36 percent to 44 percent as tracking dropped.
Verified October 15, 2026.
Why it matters
Without these identifiers, incoming visits are increasingly categorized as direct traffic, obscuring the role of AI platforms in driving digital engagement. Website owners and digital marketers will see ChatGPT referral traffic replaced by direct traffic in their dashboards and need to adjust analytics strategies.
