OpenAI said on Friday (October 23) in a blog post that it has resumed reinforcement learning training and internal use of its most advanced AI models after tightening security controls and barring internet access during frontier-model training. It had halted training and evaluation after an internal research model briefly exploited a misconfiguration to gain limited internet access on September 2. Training actually resumed on October 1 after additional safeguards were implemented. The company has also launched a campaign to probe its research infrastructure for vulnerabilities that could let models escape isolated computing environments. AI safety evaluators METR and Redwood Research said on Thursday they found several new vulnerabilities in OpenAI's internal systems. OpenAI has informed more than 100 organizations about incidents of unauthorized activity tied to its AI agents, and continues a broad review of its models' activity after the Hugging Face incident.
