OpenAI retires GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini from the API on January 14, 2027

#What happened

On October 14, 2026, OpenAI added a new "GPT-4 series model deprecations" entry to its official API deprecations page, notifying developers that GPT-4o (snapshots gpt-4o-2024-08-06 and gpt-4o-2024-11-20), GPT-4o mini (gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18), GPT-4.1 (gpt-4.1-2025-04-14), and GPT-4.1 mini (gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14) will be removed from the API on January 14, 2027. Every model on the list carries gpt-6-luna as the recommended replacement, and fine-tuned versions of these models follow the same shutdown schedule. The entry gives developers 92 days to migrate.

#Why it matters

This is the end of the GPT-4 generation inside OpenAI's API. GPT-4o defined the 2024 model era, and GPT-4.1 was the workhorse released in April 2025. Anyone with a gpt-4o or gpt-4.1 model string in production code now has a firm deadline, while OpenAI steers the whole stack toward GPT-6 Luna. It follows a separate deprecation entry for GPT-5.1, GPT-5.3-Codex, and GPT-5.4-Nano (shutdown April 1, 2027), showing OpenAI is compressing its supported model lineup around the GPT-6 family.
