OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on Dec 11, 2026 — plugins take their place
OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on December 11, 2026, pushing creators toward plugins — and custom actions, conversations, and sharing settings will not carry over automatically.
What happened
OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs, the build-your-own chatbots introduced in late 2023. On December 11, 2026, custom GPTs and their GPT pages become inaccessible. The company announced the change on September 11.
Why it matters
Workflows move to a new plugin architecture spanning ChatGPT and its Codex coding agent — but custom actions, past conversations, and sharing settings will not carry over automatically.

The replacement: plugins
Workflows move to a new plugin architecture spanning ChatGPT and its Codex coding agent. When migration becomes available, creators open My GPTs and select "Migrate to plugin." The GPT's instructions become a skill within the plugin, knowledge files are copied into reference files, and connected apps are added as apps.
The timetable
Creation of new custom GPTs ends October 26, 2026 for affected Enterprise workspaces. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral can continue until February 11, 2027. On personal accounts (Free, Go, Plus, Pro), creating new custom GPTs has already been turned off — users can only use existing ones.
What does not migrate
Custom actions do not transfer at all — rebuilding a connection may require a custom MCP server. The GPT's selected model does not carry over, nor do past conversations or sharing settings (every migrated plugin starts private). Migration uses only the latest published version, so unpublished drafts are left behind. After migration, the original GPT keeps working until the retirement date but becomes read-only.
