OpenAI launches Rosalind Academic Plan: free GPT-Rosalind access for U.S. university labs

#What happened

On October 15, 2026, OpenAI unveiled the Rosalind Academic Plan, currently available to academic labs at U.S. universities. Principal investigators and lab leads at universities without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement can apply on behalf of their labs through OpenAI's trusted access process; labs at universities with an existing Enterprise agreement must apply through their university's Enterprise access process. Once approved, PIs and lab leads can activate free access to GPT-Rosalind for up to 30 named members, alongside the other OpenAI frontier models included in the plan. API access is not included at this time. Verified PIs and lab leads manage member permissions and are responsible for their lab's approved use. Reporting on the announcement notes that research data from these accounts will not be used to train OpenAI's models by default, and that the sponsored seats run for 12 months.

#Why it matters

GPT-Rosalind is OpenAI's life-sciences model: it reasons across biological entities, synthesizes evidence from scientific literature, plans experiments, and connects with established scientific databases, with research areas including drug and protein design, candidate drugs, therapeutic proteins, peptides, and enzymes. A sponsored first year plus a default training-data opt-out directly addresses the objections labs raise about using commercial AI on unpublished findings. This is a new launch event, distinct from the earlier gpt-rosalind-discovery API pricing-page listing.
