OpenAI's Sora could get a second act: startup talks to revive the video model
The Information reports OpenAI is in talks with a Katzenberg/Peebles/Jaswa AI video startup about reviving Sora. The startup wants Sora access to sell filmmaker software. OpenAI wound down video AI earlier this year. Whether model weights would be shared is unclear.
What happened
OpenAI is reportedly considering a plan to resurrect its video model Sora, according to The Information on Monday, October 12. The company is in discussions with an unnamed startup that is developing artificial intelligence video for filmmakers and wants access to Sora to sell software and other services. The startup was co-founded by DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Sora research lead Bill Peebles, and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa.
Why it matters
Sora is the model OpenAI wound down earlier this year while it cut "side quests" to focus on core business lines ahead of an IPO. A resurrection through a startup built for professional filmmakers, with deep access to customize the model, would mark OpenAI's return to video AI through a professional tool rather than a consumer app.
