Synopsys and OpenAI team up on GPT-Synopsys: a frontier model that designs chips
Synopsys and OpenAI will jointly build GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model that operates Synopsys EDA tools for chip design, with shared revenue and a goal of shaving weeks or months off design cycles.
What happened
Synopsys and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership on September 30, 2026 to jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized AI model trained and tuned to perform semiconductor design workflows using Synopsys EDA tools. The companies signed an expansive, multi-year agreement with a revenue-sharing arrangement and joint go-to-market collaboration to make the model available to customers worldwide.
The model will take on chip design tasks starting from a description of the chip's circuits in a code-like language through laying out billions of transistors on silicon — learning to run Synopsys tools like an expert engineer, interpreting their outputs, and iteratively optimizing power, performance, and area (PPA). "To be able to shave off weeks, months from the design process and to bring more chips to the world," said OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman in the announcement video.
Synopsys announced the deal at an investor summit, where CEO Sassine Ghazi also raised the company's fiscal 2027 revenue growth forecast to 15% — above the 11.19% analyst consensus (LSEG) — and shares rose as much as 7%. Ghazi told Reuters that OpenAI will pay Synopsys a training subscription fee for learning to use its tools, and the two will share revenue based on how well the model improves chip designs. "We structured the agreement in a way that it will not be cannibalizing our business," Ghazi said. "It will be an upside to our business given we're delivering more value to the customer."
The model will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure, be designed to interoperate with customer agent harness systems, and integrate deeply with Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot, OpenAI's agentic AI platform for chip design. Early technology engagements are already underway with leading semiconductor customers. The joint offering bundles compute, model, and licenses while keeping customer-specific design data protected, with enterprise-grade security, governance, and access controls.
Crucially, Ghazi said the model's work will still be double-checked by traditional Synopsys verification tools: "The model needs these guardrails in order to check the physics. The need for validating with the highest level of fidelity, what we call sign-off or ground truth, is essential."
Why it matters
This is the first frontier-lab partnership of its kind in chip design software: instead of wrapping a general model around EDA tools, OpenAI is training a model to be a native expert user of Synopsys tools. For a news hub tracking AI moving from chat to real work, it's the enterprise-agents story crossing into hardware engineering — and the revenue-share structure gives both sides a direct stake in the model's actual design quality.
