OpenAI launches visual ads next to ChatGPT image-generation results
OpenAI will start showing visual display ads alongside ChatGPT image-generation results later this month, U.S.-only, with clearly labeled placements that do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives.
What happened
OpenAI is adding visual display ads to its advertising lineup, so sponsored placements will appear alongside images that users ask ChatGPT to generate. The new format begins rolling out later this month and will initially run only in the United States, with products and services from an initial group of test advertisers. According to the company, the ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
The launch sits within a broader expansion of OpenAI's ad measurement offerings. Its click-attribution lineup now includes AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin; advanced full-funnel measurement partners Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL; geo-based ad experimentation with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic; and brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
OpenAI introduced ads in February to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers, and extended them to India in August. Ads do not appear for Plus, Pro, or Enterprise subscribers. The company notes the formats could eventually reach ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users once they roll out globally. The announcement was verified on Oct 5, 2026 via TechCrunch.
Why it matters
OpenAI is building ChatGPT into an ad-supported business for its free and low-cost plans, and the company suggests the ads could nudge casual users toward paid subscriptions to avoid them.
