Rivian wants your next car cabin to host OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the EV maker plans to open its vehicles to third-party AI agents, naming OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse as examples, with details promised at its December AI & Autonomy Day.
What happened
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe laid out a vision at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 15, 2026: Rivian's electric trucks and SUVs should host sophisticated AI agents built by outside companies, not just its own voice assistant. Onstage, Scaringe named OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse as conceptual examples, alongside companies such as Anthropic. No partnerships have been confirmed and no launch date has been set. Rivian instead pointed questions to its AI & Autonomy Day, scheduled for December, where executives promise a fuller picture of the software roadmap.
Why it matters
The car is the next surface in the agent race. Rivian already built its own agentic framework: a request arrives, the system decides which model should handle it, simple tasks run on local vehicle hardware and harder queries go to the cloud. Opening that stack to third-party agents turns the cabin into another battleground between Dots and Muse, alongside Meta's small-business connector push. But the safety line is hard: external agents will never touch vehicle controls — no braking, no steering, no drive-by-wire. And Rivian's history of rejecting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto suggests outside agents will plug into Rivian's own stack, on Rivian's terms.
