SoftBank completes its $30B OpenAI bet: final $10B tranche closes, ~13% stake

Verified· Oct 1, 2026Published Oct 1, 2026

SoftBank executed the final $10B tranche of its $30B OpenAI follow-on investment on Oct 1, 2026 (JST) via Vision Fund 2, bringing cumulative OpenAI investment to $64.6B (~13% stake). Funded by Sep 24 bond-issuance proceeds; the remaining $10B of undrawn bridge-facility capacity was canceled Sep 30.

What happened

SoftBank Group announced on October 1, 2026 (Japan time) that it executed the third and final tranche of the follow-on investment announced February 27, 2026: USD 10.0 billion (JPY 1,579.6 billion at USD=JPY 157.96) into OpenAI Group PBC via SoftBank Vision Fund 2. That completes the $30.0 billion follow-on commitment. SBG's cumulative investment in OpenAI now totals $64.6 billion with approximately 13% ownership. The tranche was funded with proceeds from the foreign-currency senior notes issuance announced September 24, 2026. Effective September 30, 2026, SBG canceled the remaining $10.0 billion of undrawn capacity under the $40.0 billion bridge facility from March 27, 2026 — so all borrowings under that facility are repaid with no undrawn commitments left.

Context: OpenAI is separately reported (Bloomberg) to be seeking a $30B bridge round at a $1.4T valuation — already covered on this site — which is a separate story from this SoftBank close.

Why it matters

For dotsfeed readers tracking OpenAI's money: SoftBank just became OpenAI's most committed backer at $64.6B cumulative — roughly one-eighth of the company. The financing structure (an $11.1B high-yield bond sale to fund a $10B scheduled equity payment) shows the AI capital race is now running on public debt, not just venture equity. It also ties OpenAI's enterprise push (Dots, Codex, the government deals) to a concrete capital foundation at a moment when OpenAI is delaying its IPO and negotiating fresh funding.
