Tibo: 1 million Dots now running and doing things for users

Verified· Oct 12, 2026Published Oct 12, 2026

OpenAI's Tibo says 1 million Dots agents are running and working for users, per an X reply posted Oct 11. It is the first hard deployment number since the Sep 29 launch, but it says nothing about retention or paying conversions.

What happened

Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux, OpenAI's Codex product lead, wrote in an X reply posted at 01:18 UTC on October 11, 2026: "1M dots running and doing things for their users." The reply, to @ziwenxu_, came in a discussion about whether people are actually using Dots and paying for access to the product. The quote is corroborated by the willreset.com/tibo timeline entry for the same reply. This is the first concrete deployment figure OpenAI has shared since Dots launched on September 29: persistent agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, each with its own cloud computer and browser, able to keep working between conversations. The number landed two days after the official ChatGPT account announced users can create a dot directly in the iOS and Android apps, removing the desktop-only setup requirement from launch.

Why it matters

The count describes agents, not people. OpenAI includes the first dot in Pro and Business Premium plans at no extra charge, and Enterprise access needs an admin to enable the beta, so 1 million running dots does not by itself say how many users bought or upgraded because of Dots. Sottiaux gave no measurement window, no definition of "running," and no retention or task-completion figures. Those numbers would tell whether this is initial uptake or sustained use. Two weeks after launch, this is still the best public read on Dots adoption, and it sets a baseline every future number will be compared against.
