Tibo's Day 4: Codex steering is now 'instant' so you can course-correct mid-task
Codex product lead Thibault Sottiaux announced on X on October 8 that Codex steering is now instant, letting developers redirect a running task mid-flight as Day 4 of his 28-day ship-or-reset sprint.
What happened
Thibault Sottiaux (@thsottiaux), OpenAI's Codex product lead, posted on X on October 8, 2026 that steering in Codex is now instant: the model reacts much faster to mid-task adjustments, so users can course-correct a running task before it wastes more effort. This is Day 4 of his 28-day sprint, pledged on October 4 — each day brings either a clear improvement for most Codex/ChatGPT Work users or a full usage reset.
The catch
Sottiaux gave no latency measurement and did not define what "instant" means. Per OpenAI's own docs, steering queues new input for a continuation and does not undo actions already completed or cancel tools already in progress.
Why it matters
Mid-task correction is a basic control for longer-running coding agents. Until developers see real behavior on long jobs, it's a promise, not a measured win.
