Tibo: individual Daybreak Blue users will need a hardware key from Oct 1 for cyber-forward capabilities
Thibault Sottiaux announced that starting October 1, individual Daybreak Blue users must use an eligible hardware key for cyber-forward capabilities, with enterprise users unaffected.
What happened
OpenAI's Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux (@thsottiaux, OpenAI's Codex product lead) posted on X on September 30, 2026 at 10:10 AM PT: "For individual Daybreak Blue users, starting tomorrow (10/1), you'll need an eligible hardware key when using cyber-forward capabilities. Enterprise users are unaffected." In a self-reply he added: "You can enroll here: chatgpt.com/cyber."
What Daybreak Blue is
Daybreak is OpenAI's agentic cybersecurity program, split on August 10 into two tiers. Daybreak Blue is the defensive tier, running on GPT-5.6 Sol with system-level cyber guardrails removed for approved defenders — it handles code review, malware analysis, incident response, and patch validation. Daybreak Red is the offensive tier, granting vetted professionals access to GPT-5.6-Cyber, a purpose-trained model that answers 95% of advanced security prompts on OpenAI's Advanced Cybersecurity Completion Rate benchmark.
Why the hardware key
Hardware security keys have been part of Daybreak's access controls since September 1, when OpenAI made them mandatory for Daybreak accounts. Tibo's post specifies that from October 1, individual Blue users must present an eligible hardware key whenever they use cyber-forward capabilities — a physical-possession check that OpenAI's stated control strategy for models with reduced refusals on dual-use security work.
Why it matters
The requirement adds a physical-possession check to individual users' access to Blue's cyber-forward capabilities, while enterprise users remain unaffected.
