Tibo: "a few million dots" will be online within days — team-of-agents unlock gated on rollout learnings
OpenAI's Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux says "a few million dots" will be online within days, and that OpenAI is studying how people use their primary dot before unlocking agent teams.
What happened
OpenAI's Codex product lead Thibault Sottiaux (@thsottiaux) posted on X that "We will have a few million dots online within days, working on all sorts of things across such a diverse and large community." He said OpenAI is "excited to learn from all of you on what you love and what doesn't yet feel magical," and added that he personally "felt a jump after 2-3 days of use" once the dot learned his preferences and what was on his mind. He wrote that a dot "learns very quickly to be most useful and it can take on surprisingly ambitious tasks on its own." Crucially, he confirmed the multi-agent gating: "We're learning from how you all use your primary dot before releasing the ability to create an entire team of them."
Why it matters
This is the first public scale signal for the Dots rollout: a few million always-on agents online within days would make Dots one of the largest always-on agent deployments ever at launch. It confirms the staged rollout strategy — one primary dot per user first, agent teams held back until OpenAI has seen real usage patterns. For anyone planning around agent teams, the message is clear: OpenAI is tuning the teams feature on live data, not shipping it on day one.
