Tibo: GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast still "coming soon" — no date, no price, five days after OpenAI's launch promise

OpenAI's Tibo Sottiaux confirmed GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast is still on the way in an X reply to developer Ben Davis, but five days after the "coming days" launch promise there is still no release date or price.

What happened

OpenAI product and engineering leader Tibo Sottiaux (@thsottiaux) replied "6.1 coming soon" to developer Ben Davis (@davis7) on X on October 3, 2026 (posted 1 hour ago). The reply itself does not name Ultrafast, but the surrounding exchange is about the faster Ultrafast version of GPT-6.1 Sol.

Why it matters

Five days after OpenAI said Ultrafast would arrive "in the coming days," the only update is a two-word reply. Developers still have no release date and no price, so they cannot yet weigh the latency benefit against the added cost.

Still no date or price

OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29, 2026 and said the faster option would arrive "in the coming days." Five days later, Sottiaux's reply confirms the plan but gives no release date and does not announce another model. OpenAI has not published a GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast price, so developers cannot yet weigh the latency benefit against the added cost. The launch post said Ultrafast would provide up to eight times faster token generation than standard speed in Codex — that is OpenAI's stated maximum, not a guarantee.

Context

GPT-6.1 Sol launched on September 29 for ChatGPT Work, Codex and API users, pitched as near-GPT-6 Astra performance at lower cost, with standard API rates of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The API docs describe Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra, but show no GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast configuration or price.
