Tibo: OpenAI releasing a new GPT-6 version to all ChatGPT users, "going beyond text"
Tibo says OpenAI is releasing a new GPT-6 version to all ChatGPT users, with model and infra improvements aimed at scaling to 1.2B users.
What happened
Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux, OpenAI's engineering lead for Codex and ChatGPT, posted on X that OpenAI is "releasing a new version of GPT-6 to all users in ChatGPT." His post reads: "We're going beyond text and are releasing a new version of GPT-6 to all users in ChatGPT. Lots of model and infra improvements coming together here to scale it to 1.2B users!"
He did not name a specific model version or give a rollout schedule in the post, and no additional details have been published yet. The announcement landed on Day 3 of his 28-day "ship-or-reset" Codex sprint, and follows this morning's separate GPT-6 Chat-tab rollout with Intelligent UI (paid tiers today, Free and Go tomorrow).
Why it matters
This is the first new GPT-6 model version announcement since the GPT-6.1 Sol launch at DevDay 2026 - and it comes while the GPT-6.1 Astra release remains shelved over safety test failures. A model-plus-infra update scaled for ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users suggests the new version is aimed at core consumer workloads, not just Codex and ChatGPT Work where GPT-6 currently lives.
