Tibo raises GPT-6.1 Sol's default context to 500K tokens in Codex and ChatGPT Work
On Oct 11 Tibo Sottiaux raised GPT-6.1 Sol's default context from 272K to 500K tokens in Codex and ChatGPT Work, dropped long-context surcharges for subscribers, and signaled more increases to come.
What happened
OpenAI raised the default context length of GPT-6.1 Sol from 272,000 tokens to 500,000 tokens, about an 80 percent increase, for use through Codex and ChatGPT Work. Codex head Tibo Sottiaux announced the change on X on October 11, 2026. The model's maximum window is 1,050,000 tokens (up to 922,000 input and 128,000 output), and users can still adjust the default themselves. Sottiaux said the default will be increased further in the future. Alongside the change, OpenAI eliminated long-context surcharges for subscription users; API pricing stays at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
Why it matters
The bigger default means fewer context compactions on long coding sessions and multi-step professional tasks, exactly where Sol is meant to live as the near-Astra-performance workhorse in Codex. Dropping the long-context surcharge for subscribers makes the 500K default effectively free headroom. The change arrives amid Tibo's 28-day pledge of a daily improvement for Codex and ChatGPT Work users, or a full usage reset.
