At Tuesday's White House summit with AI executives and House Speaker Mike Johnson, President Trump said Jay Clayton would be a strong candidate for the White House AI czar role, with a pick possible within three or four days. When asked whom he wanted for the AI post, Trump said, "I have somebody in mind." When Clayton's name was put to him, Trump called him "a good man" and said, "He's right here. That's a good idea."
Clayton is serving as Director of National Intelligence, the president's principal intelligence adviser, overseeing the 18-agency intelligence community — giving him an institutional view of cyber risk, foreign competition, and sensitive technology use. During his July confirmation hearing, Clayton said of AI: "AI is not only an opportunity but a threat. When something's both an opportunity and a threat, you better get your arms around it."
The White House has not set out the precise duties of the AI czar role, and Trump has previously floated creating an "AI Force" as a new government agency — though its structure, mandate, and authority have not been detailed. The post was previously held by venture capitalist David Sacks, who left in March when his special government employee status expired; Sacks has continued to exert influence from an outside advisory role.
