Trump launches America.gov: a Gemini- and Grok-powered AI chatbot as the federal government's front door

On September 29, 2026, President Donald Trump launched America.gov, an AI-powered portal positioned as the "unified digital front door" to the federal government, and signed an executive order ("Streamlining Access to Government Services Through America.gov") directing federal agencies to integrate their public-facing services with the platform.

The portal offers a conversational AI chatbot that searches information from more than 29,000 government websites and answers questions with links back to official sources. It requires no account and is free and ad-free. IRS tax filing and Department of War/intelligence community services are excluded.

The site is operated by the General Services Administration and was built by the White House's National Design Studio. U.S. Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia confirmed the chatbot is powered by Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok.

#Why it matters

This is the first time the U.S. federal government has launched its own official AI chatbot, putting Washington directly into the consumer-AI race alongside OpenAI, Meta, and Google. The chatbot's launch-day behavior drew scrutiny: during Trump's own launch remarks, the bot was answering that Joe Biden won the 2020 election and that the 22nd Amendment barred Trump from a third term — then mid-launch those answers were changed to refuse "political questions." Phase 2, planned for 2027, would move beyond search into transactions like passport renewal, Medicare enrollment, and student-loan tracking.
