UK pledges £100M for AI Biosecurity Lab backed by OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind
The UK is spending £100M on an AI Biosecurity Lab to detect biological threats, with OpenAI and Anthropic contributing up to £200M in model credits and Google DeepMind assisting. What happened
Britain's government set out around £600 million ($800 million) of funding largely geared toward defending against health and security threats from AI (Reuters, Oct 24 London dateline).
The centerpiece is £100 million (~$134 million) for a new AI Biosecurity Lab using AI to detect and monitor biological threats.
OpenAI and Anthropic will offer up to £200 million of model credits to the biosecurity initiative; Google DeepMind and London-based AI life sciences startup Basecamp Research will offer other assistance.
Also in the package: £65 million to develop countermeasures against pathogens; £120 million extra for the AI Security Institute; £130 million for cyber defences for critical infrastructure (National Cyber Shield and National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre).
AI minister Kanishka Narayan said the lab aims to become a major global institution "bringing together world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats".
Why it matters
The move pairs leading AI labs directly with biosecurity infrastructure, following a month of scrutiny over AI agent safety and misuse risk.
