Walmart opens its doors to AI shopping agents with an MCP-based Agent Gateway and spending-limit Agent Profiles

On October 21, 2026, Walmart announced an Agent Gateway, an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets approved AI agents search its online inventory and complete purchases on a customer's behalf. The announcement came from Walmart CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco, per TechCrunch.

Next month, Walmart rolls out Agent Profiles: each AI agent gets a dedicated profile inside the customer's Walmart account, so agent purchases appear separately from the customer's own orders. Shoppers can require approval for every agent transaction or let the agent buy on its own within a spending limit they set, with Walmart citing $50, $100, or $200 as examples. A Walmart+ membership is not required, and the system also works for Sam's Club.

Alongside the technology, Walmart introduced enforceable agent terms: agents must not take actions beyond what the shopper intends, cannot access payment information, cannot change a payment method, and may only access the information needed for the given task. Agents that break the rules get blocked. Walmart says its returns process applies even when an agent does not act as intended.

#Why it matters

This is the sharpest counterpoint yet to Amazon's approach of blocking third-party AI shopping agents (Perplexity, Meta's Muse). While Amazon closes the door, Walmart is building the first big-box governance framework for agentic commerce, with agent activity labeled, spending capped, and approvals configurable. For shopping agents, this is a sanctioned transactional rail that could pull agent-driven purchases toward retailers that welcome them.
