Websites are blocking AI agents — Yelp wants paid licensing, Delta and two banks say no

Verified· Oct 17, 2026Published Oct 17, 2026

Yelp, Delta, JPMorgan, and Schwab are blocking AI agents like OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse: paid licensing for Yelp, security concerns for the banks. Meta answers with retailer partnerships; Shopify opens its storefronts to agents.

What happened

The open web is pushing back on autonomous agents. In reporting published today, users say Meta's Muse, xAI's Grok, OpenAI's Dots, and Instinct's agent cannot complete some online tasks on popular websites.

  • Yelp told TechCrunch it permits AI agents only if they pay for its data licensing program.
  • Delta Air Lines is preventing agents from booking tickets on users' behalf.
  • JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab confirmed they block agents from customer accounts over security concerns.
  • Users report losing access to Cars.com and Amtrak, though those companies' policies are not confirmed.
  • Amazon, already fighting AI shopping agents, objected to Muse on its site and reportedly blocks others. It previously sued Perplexity over its shopping agent; a judge ordered Perplexity to stop, an appeals court overturned that in August, and Amazon has since amended its complaint.
  • Not every block targets AI deliberately: some failures come from standard anti-bot defenses. Users report Google account blocks while using Muse and checkout problems on Walmart, despite Meta's partnership.
  • Cloudflare now offers tools letting sites block AI crawlers.
  • OpenAI and Google did not immediately respond to the reporter's requests for comment; Instinct declined.

Why it matters

Agents are only as useful as the web they can reach. For Dots, whose pitch is doing real work across your apps, a tollbooth web — paid licensing, security blocks, anti-bot misfires — is the defining constraint of the rollout, bigger than any model upgrade. The industry split is already visible: Meta is cutting retailer partnerships (Muse shops at Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Best Buy) while Shopify opened its storefront network to agents. The likely equilibrium is licensing: agents pay for access, and the cost lands on users.
